Random. Again.

~ The husband was in Delhi on work last week, and returned home over the weekend. When he asked if I wanted anything from Delhi, I told him I didn’t need anything specific, and to pick up anything he thought would interest me, if he had the time. The guy frequented the grocery store near his place of work whenever he had time to spare, and picked up a few special ‘Dilli’ things. Packets of mini rajma, the softest of paneer, and makhana were among the things that came home with him. πŸ™‚ I was overjoyed. He knows me a little too well. πŸ™‚ The paneer in Delhi has a freshness all its own, I must say!

~ I read up a bit on makhana, and came to know that they are lotus seeds, popularly used in Delhi and some other North Indian states. I haven’t seen much of them in Bangalore, or tasted them, ever. I am curious to know what they taste like, and eagerly looking forward to cooking them. I’ll make a curry out of them, maybe. Apparently, they have loads of health benefits. Has any of you tried them out? What other uses can I put them to?

~ I have been facing a sort of reading slump, after I finished with the last couple of books. I have leafed through quite a few books from my TBR pile, but nothing is really holding my attention. The OH asked me if I wanted to buy a new book, but I refused. No blurb or dust jacket is capturing my fancy at the moment. 😦 Do you have any suggestions for me?

~ Just this morning, the sweet Greenboochi sent me an e-copy of The Supreme Macaroni Company by Adriana Trigiani, a book that I had been waiting to get my hands on. Thank you so much, GB! πŸ™‚ Is it the book I am meant to read presently? We shall see.

~ The OH’s birthday came on a day when he was in Delhi, much to my disappointment. The poor guy was up to his gills in work on that day, down with a cold and a headache, famished and craving for home-made rasam and hot rice and no food till 10 PM, and no gas in the guesthouse even for a steam inhalation. 😦 I was super-duper sad. To compensate, the OH’s cousin brought over a surprise cake on Saturday, and it was cut amidst great fanfare. Fun!

~ Amma has been staying over at my place because the OH was not in town all of last week. We have been having some fun girlie times together, and it is just like the old days. πŸ™‚ We go out every morning for a walk and to buy fresh vegetables, and cook them in the evening. And, we have been experimenting quite a bit in the kitchen. I’ve learnt quite a few dishes from her – lemon poha, Bangalore bakery-style vegetable toast, ragda pattice and paratha frankies were among them.

~ It has been ages since we went on a trip! I am so craving for one now. I want to go to a place that is completely new to me, observe the little things around me, eat a new kind of cuisine, and see the local sights. Sigh!

  1. Dont know if you have read this already – try ‘Goldfinch’ by Donna Tartt. On humour/romance and just brilliant writing side – try ‘The Adventures of Sally’ by PG Wodehouse. This book is my ALL TIME favourite and i classify it as my comfort read. Can read this anytime, anywhere and from any page :). You can get a free copy of it on the net for your kindle. I am an evangelist when it comes to this book πŸ˜›

I will look up Goldfinch. Sounds like quite a serious read, though, which I am not up for at the moment. 😦

I haven’t read any Wodehouse yet, I am ashamed to admit. Should check out The Adventures of Sally. πŸ™‚ Thanks for the reco!

  2. hello!
Makhana is delicious! I liked them just dry roasted with salt.
I love paneer and the ones locally available are most disappointing. Nothing like fresh paneer eaten raw with salt and crushed pepper. While I was visiting Pune, a friend and I ordered tomato and paneer salad, it came with giant chunks of salted paneer and slices of fresh tomatoes, salt sprinkled too. Was SO SO good! I totally get you on Dilli paneer and I vouch for Dilli curd too!
I am currently reading “Apron Strings” and it is quite nice. Share the e-copy with me too! πŸ™‚

Belated bday wishes to the OH πŸ™‚

I made the makhana curry too. Yet to taste it roasted, with lemon juice and salt. That sounds delicious. πŸ™‚

I am not a big fan of raw paneer. 😦

What’s Apron Strings all about? Interesting name?

E-copy of which book? The Supreme Macaroni Company?

      Thank you! πŸ™‚

  3. Delhi ka food has a taste which is just out of the world, be it paneer or anything else πŸ˜€

Makhana!! We use it a lot. You can make Makhana, Paneer & Matar ki subji, Makhane ki kheer or simply roast it and sprinkle some salt and black pepper and eat it JLT!! In its own it has not taste!!! You need to roast it in ghee!!

Belated B’day wishes to your OH πŸ™‚

  4. I can completely understand the book block part(if I can call it that :)) I suffered for quite a while and cracked it at last!! Am reading ‘To Sir, With Love’ by E.R Braithwaite and am loving it! Do try it out if you haven’t read it already.
If you like the humour genre – I would recommend ‘My Family and other Animals’ by Gerald Durrell.

  5. Hi , Have been reading your blog for sometime, but never commented. Really like the way you put random things and write about bangalore. i also stay in bamgalore, and have been working in Basavangudi for almost 8 years but was thrilled when you wrote about the Bull temple and kadlekai parishe. you know Bull temple is just a stone throw away from my office and have been witnessing the parishe for 8 years. My office is just on the Bull Temple road.
Makhana can be made as kheer too just the way we make rice kheer or vermicelli. We eat while fasting, just roast some kaju , makhana and groundnuts in ghee sprinkle some salt and pepper and enjoy. its good and filling. it s famous dry fruit in Bihar and is used is sweets too.

Keep writing, Its simple and nice to read,

  6. Awww the OH is too sweet πŸ™‚ I would love such gifts anytime πŸ™‚

I have seen Makhana only in Bangalore for the first time. Every time my hands go to pick up a packet, but then I would be wondering what do I do with them and not pick them at all. I wonder how they taste too. Let me know what you made with them, then I will muster the courage to pick them up πŸ™‚

Hope you enjoy reading the book, TGND. I am half way through πŸ™‚

I miss Amma so much, hope we all can have a get together soon πŸ™‚ Glad you enjoyed your time with Amma πŸ™‚

  7. Makhana with just haldi, chilli powder and curry leaves is an awesome low-cal snack. Just the way they make masala murmura (puffed rice). My sister and I eat it while watching TV πŸ™‚
