While Alice and her friends were enjoying their tea party on Miramar Beach, Goa, Shrek took up temporary residence in a pretty castle on the city’s Calangute Beach. We were not expecting him to be there; we were quite taken by surprise on seeing him the minute we entered the beach.
The castle, 20 feet tall, is apparently the largest sand castle ever built in India. The details that have been put into the castle are awe-inspiring, right from the design of the bricks to the turrets and the cracks in the walls. Shrek, too, is picture-perfect, with his facial features etched on sand to perfection. His cute, little donkey is with him, too!
How did Shrek and his castle come to be on Calangute beach? Again, it is the handiwork of Sand Cult, in association with Goa Tourism. The structure has been created by Simon Smith, master sand artist from the UK.
The sculpture can be viewed and admired by anyone, but you need to put in any amount of your choice in the donation box kept alongside it, if you wish to take pictures of it.
The art will be open for public viewing till March 31, 2014. (RM, you might want to ask your Amma-Appa to visit!)
Oh wow!! What beauty!

It was beautifully done. We were amazed at the level of talent that would have gone into doing such work.

The sand castle show happens every year around the time of the Carnival. Did you manage to catch that while you were here? These days it is the epitome of commercialisation, but still holds some Goan charm for me 🙂
Youre SO right, there is so much more to Goa than the beaches. WHile I wont say the beaches are overrated, because like you said there are still a good number and variety of beaches for all kinds of activities, I do think there is so much to this state that remains unexplored. Iv lived here 4 years and STILL havent seen even half

No, I didn’t catch the show. 😦 I didn’t know there was a show, and that it happens every year.
True – there is so much more to Goa than the beaches. I would love to explore all of it. That said, I love the beaches too. They symbolise relaxation to me. 🙂

I was there two days back and was stunned to see the hard work and all the detailing that has gone into the castle. We did get a few pics clicked too 🙂

Looks like you visited Goa at the perfect time!! Goa has never caught onto me like Gokarna did! The sheer lack of activities in Gokarna force me to relax!! 😀

Yes, we visited Goa at the right time, I think, too. 🙂
I am yet to visit Gokarna, but Goa is perfect for me to relax, any time. Both times we have visited Goa, we have ended up utterly relaxed.
