Thai Raw Mango And Onion Salad

So, the salad mania still continues at our place. We are religiously trying to include a salad in our lunches most days of the week, if not daily. After the Thai green/raw papaya salad I made in the last week, I also tried my hands on a Thai-style green mango and onion salad. It turned out to be a big hit, again, and is another dish that is going to be a regular at our house henceforth.


For the Thai raw mango salad, I took this recipe as a guide, and made a few, little variations of my own. Like the Thai green papaya salad, this one too has a beautiful medley of simple, clean flavours, and serves as a great appetiser for the summer months.

Without further ado, I will get to the way I made the salad, and leave it to you to try it and find out for yourself how gorgeous it tastes.

Ingredients (for 2 medium-sized servings):

1 medium-sized raw mango, peeled and julienne cut (A julienne cut would stop the salad from getting too soggy – I grated the mango and got a soggy salad, not that it wasn’t tasty!)

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 green chillies, very, very finely chopped (to ensure that you don’t get a piece of fire in your mouth as you eat the salad)

A 1/2-inch piece of ginger, very, very finely chopped (you don’t want to bite on a big piece of ginger in the middle of eating your tasty salad!)

A small bunch of fresh coriander leaves, very finely chopped

1/2 cup peanuts (roasted on a low flame till crisp, let to cool down, skin removed, and coarsely crushed in a mixer – do not make a fine powder, just crush the peanuts roughly)

1 teaspoon soya sauce

Salt, to taste (be careful with the salt, as the soya sauce is already salty)

2 tablespoons honey


  1. In a large mixing bowl, take the grated mango, chopped onions, salt to taste, soya sauce, chopped coriander, ginger, and green chillies. Mix well. Let rest for about 10 minutes.
  2. Just before serving, mix in the ground peanuts. Serve immediately.

I did a whole lot of things with raw mangoes last season, and hope to the same this year as well. I will consider this my experiment for this year’s Raw Mango Series.
