The randomness returns…

** It is funny how, when something is on our mind, we find connections to it in everything around us, both positive and negative. We find connotations for every little thing that we notice happening, in the same way as a hungry man notices tasty food everywhere he goes. He might have never bothered to give the food stalls on his path a look before, if he were well-fed, even if they had been throwing out an aroma fit enough to please the gods!

** I have been reading Books, Baguettes And Bedbugs by Jeremy Mercer, also published as Time Was Soft There: A Paris Sojourn At Shakespeare & Co. in some countries. An ex-investigative crime journalist’s memoir about the time he spent at the world-famous Paris bookstore, Shakespeare & Co., it has been an interesting read so far, though a tad depressing at times, too.

** I have also been reading Adriana Trigiani’s The Shoemaker’s Wife, a light read that I had wanted to get my hands on for quite some time. I am just a few chapters into the book yet, and it has been a good read so far.

** This recipe for lemon cake was tweaked a wee bit to make a plain cake with honey glaze for the OH’s nephew’s birthday. It turned out to be a super-duper hit, so much so that I didn’t have a piece of it left over to taste myself! No, I am not complaining. I am thrilled.

** The MIL has the habit of bringing kilos and kilos of fresh fruits to our house whenever she visits. The latest in this series was a big bag of juicy apples. A couple of them were converted into apple crumble yesterday, an experiment that turned out to be quite tasty!

** In spite of all that is ugly with the world, I realise that there is a lot of beauty out there too, every single day. Especially Bangalore. How can quiet lanes lined on both sides with trees full of bright orange flowers not look pretty when bathed in the kind of sunlight that fills the day just before it is about to rain?

** I read somewhere that you cannot lie to yourself or pretend at 3 AM, even though you might be able to do so all through the day. 3 AM is the time when you are at your most vulnerable, at your truest self. What do you do with your 3 AM thoughts and fears? Keep them closeted off in a section of your mind that you never unlock during the day? Go about your life as if these thoughts never existed? Or do you let them take over your life, till you find a resolution to them?

** The pots of mint and strawberry plants are placed next to each other in our small apartment garden. Both of them have flourished over time and become full-fledged creepers, growing out of their respective pots and into the next one. The other day, I noticed that they have set roots even on the edges of the pots and comfortably spread out as they wanted to. Did I think that by putting my plants in pots, I would be setting boundaries for them? It might be a small thing, but it made quite an impression on me.

** ‘Foreign chocolates’ still hold the same appeal for me as they used to ten years earlier, I have realised. A sweet cousin of mine visited from the US of A and, thanks to her, our refrigerator is stocked with Hersheys, Toblerones and Lindts. The OH and I are having the time of our lives hogging them. Thank you, cuz!

** I am trying to get accustomed to reading books online, just because some great books that are way too expensive otherwise have reasonably priced e-book editions available for sale. I do want to read these books, without blowing up all my life’s savings on them. Hence, the transformation. I can’t say it has been an enjoyable process so far, but I am glad to have access to these books this way. Breaking of old habits does not come easily, I say!

** Any of you had a chance to have the Mexican pizza at Taco Bell? I tried it recently, and fell in love with it. Such a yummy and light snack!

** Have you tried the Lebanese rolls at Domino’s? I have been wanting to sample them for a long while now!

** Have you ever noticed the eyes of a cow? I am never not amazed by how beautiful they are.

** I love baking my cakes in an old aluminium dabba that has been a part of our family for years now, and chopping my vegetables on an old piece of wood left over from the days when our house was being renovated, before we moved in to it. I love making my dosas on the old, thick iron griddle that we bought in Trichy a week or so after our marriage. The OH and Amma have tried to introduce non-stick tavas, fancy cake tins and modern chopping boards into my kitchen, but they somehow don’t hold the same charm for me. As I prepare the day’s dinner or lunch every day, they make me realise how old-school I really am.

  1. I always love your randomness πŸ™‚

Having your own little herb garden is so much fun, no? I have mini pots with mint and basil in my kitchen too. Oh the pride when I use them. But I have killed a couple of ’em too when we go away for long periods and can’t find a keeper.

I loved knowing that about your chopping board. I am a lot like that too πŸ™‚

The season’s apples are delicious na πŸ™‚

I have been awake till 4 AM during college times, but never have woken up at 3AM…maybe to use the bathroom some days πŸ™„

Even I bake in aluminum dabbas πŸ™‚

Next time, number the bullets for easy reference okay? πŸ™‚
Point#1: I totally agree! Same for movies, books, quotes. It all ‘resonates’ with us depending on our frame of mind.

Point#5: Apple Crumble? WOW. Recipe please. And teach me to bake, pliss!

(Too much trouble counting the bullets now!)

Love the Bangalore roads, neatly lined by the colorful trees. They become all the more prettier after a shower!

3 AM? How does that work when I am snoring away to glory? How do we even remember/realize what our thoughts are? Or is it only if you wake up?

I have never liked taco bell. Somehow, the thought of eating rice rolled in a roti is very unappealing to me. πŸ™‚

Dominoes- again, never been a fan of dominoes. Hero has wanted to sample the lebanese thing. Tell me once you try πŸ™‚

Cows are generally so beautiful. The grace!

I love that last bullet. Quirky and cute!

And finally, how have you been? We need to meet again. I unloaded the carton that had your gift. Need to meet soon!

Take care darling. Message me when you feel like it.

Arre, I am no cooking or baking goddess. I am still learning, experimenting and making mistakes. πŸ™‚ Will surely share the recipe for apple crumble soon.

The first time I had a meal at Taco Bell, I didn’t like it. Then, I went there again after years and became a fan. Now, the OH and I are regulars there. πŸ™‚

What I meant by ‘3 AM thoughts’ are the fears and dreams that occupy your mind at 3 AM, of course when you are awake. If they have the power to keep you awake, they matter greatly to you, right? That is what I meant.

Thank you. We do need to meet soon, and I need to call you up. Hopefully, soon. πŸ™‚

Wow – you got to interview Jeremy Mercer!! Your blog, along with a few other travel blogs, was where I came across Shakespeare And Company for the first time.

Off to read your article now. πŸ™‚

  6. Shoemaker’s Wife sounds interesting! I have bookmarked that Lemon cake recipe from your blog – it’s strange that the internet is full of cake recipes and yet one wants to try stuff word-of-mouth mostly!! 3 am theory sounds interesting, can never keep myself awake that long though:)

Your mint and strawberry plants got me thinking too! How I have never thought of these, I wonder!

I dont like reading online. But I must say I too have read a lot of e-books. Something is better than nothing is what I think here πŸ™‚

You should try Apple Crumble Cake next time! It tastes so good πŸ™‚

I am so with you on the 3AM thoughts. I cant fall asleep once I am awake! Sigh. And yes, those thoughts are so true.

Even I stick onto my old cookware. I cant throw away anything from my kitchen. Iron tava is something I dont have. I should get one, now that you have tempted me πŸ™‚

You don’t own an iron tava? I am surprised! You should get one… the dosas turn out amazingly tasty as compared to the ones on a non-stick pan.

Apple crumble cake? Never heard of it! Please share the recipe.

  9. You knowwww, I believe the 3AM theory too. I have been up all night for about 2 weeks and somewhere around 2:30- 3:30 I hit my lowest point and I thought it was just me :/

May be I should just try and sleep early πŸ˜›

3AM thoughts are true, is it? I’ll set the alarm for 3AM tonight to validate if the statement is true, okay! πŸ˜›

What strawberries at home? You Bangalore people.. Your weather lets you grow even apples at home. Sigh.

I can never make ‘full dosas’ in a steel tawa. Awesome that you hold on to such things! πŸ™‚

You come home, and I’ll make a cake for you. Okay? πŸ™‚

Errr.. 3 AM thoughts might not be true. What I meant is your fears are at your worst, and your dreams are at their truest at 3 AM. You cannot really lie to yourself at 3 AM. I somehow find that true.

Arre.. the strawberries thing is not as fancy as it sounds. πŸ™‚ I have a small plant in a pot, which has yielded only a few small fruits yet. I love keeping it, though.

The first dosa usually does not turn out well for me on an iron tava.. the others come out okay. It depends upon the batter, me thinks.

I would love to bake a cake for you, RM. Whenever we meet – pakka! πŸ™‚ I can’t promise you it will taste like a store-bought cake, though.

I will surely share the recipe for the apple crumble soon.

You are fortunate if you have never been awake with worry at 3 AM, I would say. πŸ˜€

Thank you, RM. πŸ™‚ Yes, I do have a strawberry plant at home. Got it from a nursery – they had it on sale and I couldn’t resist the temptation. It has only yielded a few small strawberries so far, but I haven’t given up on it yet. πŸ™‚
